The Story

The road to Getaway began with a random motorcycle ride—I was so charmed and intrigued by historic downtown Carver, I pulled over.

Soon after, Terah and I moved here from Northeast Minneapolis in search of a different life. We quickly fell in love with Carver and the surrounding area.

We had recently finished a years-long quest to ride through all 50 United States, Canada and Mexico. Our pit stops at unique cafes, coffee shops and restaurants provided refreshment and rest. We didn’t imagine that we’d ever be on the other side of the counter!

It was the middle of the pandemic and we were in a new town, missing normal human interaction (and to be honest, good coffee and craft cocktails). As we started fixing up the building, friendly locals stopped by and asked—will it be a coffee shop?

Well, maybe it should be! We visited 250+ shops over the next few years, taking notes along the way. We decided to go for it, built a world-class team, and got to work.

Renovating the distressed building and starting new businesses at the same time was challenging, to say the least. We’re located within a federal floodplain, a local flood ordinance, and Carver’s National Historic District, and the restrictions were quite the knot to untangle.

There were many setbacks and surprises, but some of them were good—like having a baby right in the middle of the construction process :)

With our team and enough caffeine, we made it! In January 2023 we opened for business and the Airbnb upstairs opened soon after. We’re very grateful for new friends, our Getaway colleagues, and the community’s support.

We hope you enjoy your Getaway!
